Job Description

About Siegfried

Siegfried is a multidisciplinary engineering firm with strong roots to California's Central Valley. Headquartered in Stockton, California, we provide civil engineering, structural engineering, landscape architecture, survey, and geotechnical engineering services for private and public sector clients. We are the selected and premier service provider on major healthcare and infrastructure projects in the area for all disciplines. Geotechnical laboratory services are performed in the Sacramento office.

We are seeking a highly motivated Project Engineer to support our growing Geotechnical Department. The ideal candidate should be self-driven and have an interest in working in all field, laboratory, and office environments while collaborating individually with part of the team at large. Upon achieving experience needed in field, laboratory, and office environments, the successful candidate will be available for advancement with future growth in the department.

What You’ll Do

The scope of anticipated tasks will include field, laboratory, and office engineering work related to the geotechnical engineering aspects of design and construction. The work will be performed under the oversite of a California Registered Professional Engineer and Geotechnical Engineer.

Field - Construction Phase of Projects

  • Observe site preparation, trench backfill, and earth fill operations that include in-place field density testing (by nuclear and/or e-gauge and sand cone)
  • Sample soil, aggregate, and asphalt materials
  • Observe shallow and deep foundations to verify conformance to geotechnical report and building code criteria
  • Document findings of observations and testing performed

Field - Design Phase of Projects

  • Develop work plans for field work performed
  • Procure permits for field work
  • Coordinate drilling/CPT subcontractors for scope of work, access, and schedule
  • Mark areas for field exploratory work and coordinate for utility clearance
  • Log boreholes during drilling including soil classification, recording of N-value, and drilling conditions
  • Collect samples and transport to laboratory for testing
  • Perform dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) testing
  • Perform geophysical testing
  • Perform percolation and infiltration testing

Laboratory Testing

  • Prepare samples and perform index testing (i.e., moisture content, density, Atterberg Limits, grain size analysis, hydrometer, Expansion Index), volume change (consolidation), and strength (direct shear and unconfined compressive strength).
  • Prepare samples and perform tests for moisture-density relationships
  • Prepare test reports for tests performed

Geotechnical Engineering

  • Using AutoCAD, develop figures and plates for geotechnical reports including site plans and geologic cross sections
  • Compute bearing capacity, settlement, and lateral earth pressures.
  • Compute asphalt and concrete pavement thickness
  • Prepare field reports and memorandums documenting work performed and results.
  • Summarize the site conditions (past and present) of a site including the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions encountered during the field exploratory phase
  • Summarize the local and regional geologic conditions based on mapping encountered
  • Identify geologic and seismic hazards that may impact the site
  • Present seismic design parameters (code based and by site specific ground motion hazard analysis)

What We’re Looking For

A successful candidate should have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical emphasis)
  • 3-5 Years of experience
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) Certification
  • Master’s degree in Geotechnical Engineering a plus
  • Firm understanding in soil mechanics theory including an understanding of stress-strain concepts and routine geotechnical analysis
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD
  • Motivation to obtain the Professional Engineer (Civil) registration
  • Desire to advance to project management positions
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
  • Excellent problem solving with capacity to think outside the box
  • Strong ability to work individually and on a team
  • Capacity to lift up to 50 pounds (samples or lab/field testing equipment)

Why Join Siegfried?

  • Siegfried field vehicle provided
  • Work on impactful and diverse engineering projects
  • Join a supportive, innovative, and purpose-driven team
  • Opportunities for career growth and mentorship
  • Exposure to cross-functional collaboration across disciplines
  • Continued learning and development encouraged
  • Direct pathway, with qualifying experience, to take the Professional Engineer (PE) exam

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience, qualifications, and industry standards. Additional factors such as education, certifications, and specialized skill sets may also be considered.
