JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking an experienced Cell Biology Scientist to join the cell biology department of Sakata Seed America and conduct research through the development of innovative plant tissue culture protocols and products across various vegetable crops. This role will contribute to the advancement of breeding programs through the development of novel methodologies and refinement of existing tissue culture techniques using diverse source tissues and cells.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop research project plans with clear timeline, budget and deliverables
- Design and optimize tissue culture protocols and troubleshoot experimental challenges to support plant growth and development
- Develop and validate new in vitro protocols for crops lacking established methodologies
- Stay abreast of new technologies and developments in the field and propose relevant innovative approaches to management
- Evaluate, analyze, document and communicate research results accurately and timely
- Provide mentorship & technical training and hands-on guidance to lab technicians and temporary staff
- Collaborate with cross-functional R&D and Production teams to translate Cell Biology research into practical and impactful applications
- Maintain compliance with safety and regulatory standards through adhering to good laboratory practices, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring proper handling and disposal of biological materials
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a related field, or a master's degree with 7+ years of hands-on experience in plant tissue culture (preferably in industry)
- Practical experience working with vegetable crops such as melon, pepper, lettuce, and pumpkin across laboratory, greenhouse and field settings.
- Experience in diverse in vitro techniques such as microspore culture, protoplast culture, gynogenesis, embryogenesis & cryopreservation
- Comfortable working in both laboratory and greenhouse settings
- Demonstrated ability to set up and perform multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize tasks effectively
- Demonstrated ability to mentor young talent and explain complex cell biology concepts
- Thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic research environment while managing multiple priorities
- Excellent problem-solving, planning, communication and organizational skills
- Proficiency in research project management skills.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Horticulture, Plant Science, or a closely related discipline or a master's degree with 7+ years of experience
EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND:
Minimum 5 years of experience in techniques such as double haploid production and micropropagation
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Capable of working with hazardous laboratory chemicals and handling hazardous waste.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment when necessary and/or required.
- Able to use hand tools, and/or laboratory equipment while sitting or standing for extended periods of time.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- Salary: $100,000- $120,000
