Job Description:
The Water Engineering Group Leader is a senior technical position responsible for providing advanced technical leadership, oversight, and subject-matter expertise for water-related projects across TYPSA US. This role supports project management and delivery for municipal, state, federal, and private clients in the areas of water, wastewater, stormwater, irrigation, conveyance, hydrology, hydraulics, storage, treatment and integrated water management.
This position is expected to serve as a recognized technical authority, contributing to complex project delivery, mentoring staff, supporting business development pursuits, and advancing TYPSA’s technical excellence in water-related disciplines. The role works closely with Project Managers, Practice Leaders, and other technical leaders across multiple offices and geographic markets.
Primary Job Duties:
- Technical Leadership and Expertise:
- Serve as a senior technical expert in water-related engineering disciplines, including water distribution, wastewater collection and treatment, stormwater, irrigation systems, canals, hydrology, hydraulics, conveyance systems, storage, integrated water management and related infrastructure.
- Provide technical oversight, review, and quality control for complex planning, design, modeling, and analysis efforts.
- Lead or support development of technical approaches, design criteria, and engineering solutions for challenging or high-risk projects.
- Apply advanced engineering judgment to evaluate alternatives, resolve technical issues, and ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
- Support preparation and review of technical reports, design calculations, plans, specifications, and construction documents.
- Project Support and Delivery:
- Project Managers in defining and monitoring progress of scopes of work, schedules, budgets, and staffing plans for water-related projects. Prepare project performance metrics and progress reports for internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Identify project risks and support development of mitigation strategies, assist in issue resolution.
- Participate in key client meetings, technical workshops, and coordination meetings with agencies, stakeholders, and project partners.
- Provide technical guidance during project execution to ensure quality, consistency, and adherence to project objectives.
- Assist with responding to RFIs, reviewing submittals, and providing engineering support during construction as needed.
- Mentoring and Staff Development:
- Mentor and provide technical guidance to engineers, designers, and junior technical staff.
- Promote best practices, technical consistency, and knowledge sharing across the Water Engineering team.
- Support development of internal technical standards, tools, and procedures.
- Recruit key staff to grow the Water Engineering team.
- Business Development and Strategic Support:
- Contribute technical expertise to proposals, SOQs, and interviews, including development of technical narratives, project approaches, and risk mitigation strategies.
- Support client development and long-term relationships through technical credibility and responsiveness.
- Assist Practice and Group Leaders in identifying emerging market opportunities, technical service offerings, and areas for growth within Water Engineering.
- Communication and Collaboration:
- Demonstrate clear and concise written and verbal communication skills when presenting technical information to clients, agencies, and internal teams.
- Collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams across engineering, environmental, construction, and digital services.
- Represent TYPSA in professional organizations, technical committees, and industry events as appropriate.
Job Qualifications (Education, Experience, and Skills):
- Minimum Education: Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive experience in water-related engineering disciplines.
- Demonstrated experience serving as a technical lead or subject-matter expert on complex water, wastewater, irrigation, conveyance, hydrology, hydraulics, storage and treatment projects.
- Experience working with municipal, state, and/or federal agencies.
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) license or similar International licensing required.
- Ability to obtain registration as required by project needs.
- Advanced technical knowledge of water and wastewater infrastructure planning, design, and analysis.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and engineering judgment skills.
- Ability to perform and review complex technical calculations and modeling efforts.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical writing and presentations.
- Ability to mentor staff and contribute positively to a collaborative, professional team environment.
- Experience with industry-standard engineering software and modeling tools commonly used in water-related design.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and support projects across different geographic locations.
- Travel required as necessary to support project and client needs.
- Valid Driver’s License, with the ability to maintain insurability under the company’s insurance carrier.

Working Conditions and Environment:
This position will require general supervision and will have to use independent judgment within established guidelines. Generally, uses the advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret, or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Will need the ability to establish rapport quickly with others working on the same project, and be able to promote a positive team environment. Working knowledge of dealing with a diverse population while using tact, diplomacy, and respect.
