Job Description

The mechanical and servicing affiliate of a construction company with two aggregate plants is seeking to hire a full-time Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic. We are affiliated with a Southern California based general engineering contractor with operations consisting of primarily highway and street construction, and rock, sand, and gravel quarry operations with related hot mix asphalt facilities.

Description of the Position: The Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic job typically involves diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy equipment like trucks and construction machinery powered by diesel engines. This includes performing routine maintenance, troubleshooting problems, and making necessary repairs. The role often requires expertise in various systems, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diesel systems.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Diagnose and Repair: Identify and repair mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues in heavy vehicles and equipment.
  2. Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance tasks like oil changes, fluid checks, tire rotations, and filter replacements.
  3. Troubleshooting: Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with engines, transmissions, brakes, steering, and other components.
  4. Systematic Inspection: Inspect vehicles and equipment for potential issues, including brake systems, steering, transmissions, engines, and other parts.
  5. Part Replacement and Repair: Replace or repair malfunctioning components, parts, and equipment.
  6. Test Driving: Test drive vehicles to ensure they operate smoothly and to verify repairs.
  7. Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance, and inspections.
  8. Following Regulations: Adhere to motor vehicle repair shop regulations and standards.
  9. Communication: Consult with supervisor about repair needs and provide clear explanations of work performed.
  10. Safety Practices: Follow all safety procedures and regulations when working with vehicles and equipment.
  11. Quarterly Basic Inspection of Terminal (BIT) on Truck Tractors.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  1. Technical Knowledge: In-depth knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulics, and other relevant automotive systems.
  2. Troubleshooting Skills: Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and electrical problems.
  3. Diagnostic Tools: Proficiency in using diagnostic tools and equipment.
  4. Physical Strength and Stamina: Ability to lift heavy parts and work in various positions.
  5. Communication Skills: Ability to communicate effectively with team members.
  6. Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
  7. Problem-solving skills: Ability to identify and resolve complex mechanical issues.
  8. Experience: Experience in diesel mechanic or heavy equipment repair is required.
  9. Certifications: ASE certifications or trade school certifications can be beneficial.
  10. Education: High school diploma or GED is required.
  11. Must have a valid Class C driver’s license.

Desired Experience:

  • 2-years minimum proven experience in similar position.
