Superintendent - Asphalt Construction

Orange, California


About the Position

We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated Superintendent to oversee asphalt paving and construction operations in Orange County and surrounding areas. This leadership role requires a hands-on professional who can manage multiple crews, ensure project quality and safety, and deliver projects on time and within budget.


Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day field operations for asphalt paving, grading, and site preparation projects from start to finish.
  • Coordinate and supervise field crews, subcontractors, and equipment operators to ensure efficient workflow and adherence to project specifications.
  • Review project plans, specifications, and schedules to develop comprehensive work plans and resource allocation strategies.
  • Conduct daily site inspections to monitor work quality, safety compliance, and progress against project timelines.
  • Ensure all work meets or exceeds industry standards, municipal codes, and company quality benchmarks.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact between the field operations and project managers, clients, and inspectors.
  • Enforce strict adherence to OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and Cal/OSHA requirements.
  • Lead daily safety meetings and toolbox talks to maintain a culture of safety awareness.
  • Investigate and document any incidents or near-misses and implement corrective actions.
  • Manage equipment deployment and maintenance schedules to maximize productivity and minimize downtime.
  • Monitor material quantities, coordinate deliveries, and manage inventory to prevent delays. Review and approve daily time cards, equipment usage logs, and progress reports.
  • Mentor and develop crew members, providing training and guidance to enhance skills and performance. Address personnel issues promptly and professionally in coordination with management.


Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5-7 years of experience in asphalt paving and construction, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or superintendent role
  • Thorough knowledge of asphalt paving techniques, grading operations, and construction methods
  • Strong understanding of project plans, specifications, and technical drawings
  • Proven track record of successfully managing multiple concurrent projects
  • Valid California driver's license with clean driving record
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficiency with construction management software and technology

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Caltrans specifications and public works projects
  • Grade checking and survey experience
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) communication skills

Physical Requirements

This position requires extended periods outdoors in various weather conditions. Must be able to walk job sites over uneven terrain, climb ladders, and lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Extended standing and physical activity required throughout the workday.

Compensation

Salary Range: $90,000 - $130,000 annually

Compensation is commensurate with experience, qualifications, and demonstrated performance. Additional considerations for candidates with specialized certifications or extensive public works experience.


Work Schedule

Full-time position, typically Monday through Friday with occasional weekend work based on project demands. Early start times are standard in the asphalt industry (5:00-6:00 AM). Overtime opportunities available during peak construction season.
