Job Description

Job DescriptionJob SummaryCleans and prepares wood or metal surfaces for painting, removes dirt, grease, rust, scale and other contaminants. Masks and tapes areas not requiring paint. Paints parts, equipment and structural surfaces on interior and exterior of ships and shipyard buildings. Mixes material in accordance with Product Data Sheets. Inspects prepped and painted areas and performs touch up work as needed. Sets up spray equipment pneumatic or conventional, operating airless pumps, HVLP spray gun and five gallon conventional spray pot, for non-skid application, as well as application by phenolic roll. Dismantles scaffolding of multiple types. Cleans tanks and performs general shipyard cleanup. Inspects and sorts scaffolding materials. Operates high reach equipment and power tools. Moves furniture and other equipment as needed. Assists with all Painter, Blaster, Carpentry and Waysman tasks.Qualification Standards Must be able to hear warning signals and read and comprehend safety instructions, regulations and warnings. Must have the ability to read a tape measure and operate power tools safely. Must be clean shaven for a respirator fit (modest moustache is fine). Must have the ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and able to work any shift.Essential Job TasksSet up pneumatic tools and equipment at job site to conduct surface preparation.Prepare surface to be painted, including solvent wiping, masking, hand tool and mechanical cleaning.Set up spray paint equipment at job site to conduct coating application.Mix paint materials according to PDS and apply coating to surface in accordance with Ships Specification requirements.Hand paint in designated areas; inspect work for touch up.Perform general housekeeping in assigned work areas, during and at completion of work.Prepare surface and apply coating in hard to reach elevated areas.Line tends for spray operations.Dismantle scaffolds and other wooden structures, safety handrails, and other equipment.Cleans tanks and performs general shipyard clean-up.Operates paint equipment, chipping equipment and power tools such as saws, drills, and chainsawsInspects and sorts scaffold materials.Installs fire equipment and load out material in support of ship delivery.Occasionally move furniture and other equipment.Work with Paint, Blast, & Waysman in performing cross trade responsibilitiesMaterials, Tools Equipment, Work AidsPaint, solvents, biodegradable degreasers, masking materials, variety of cleaning materials, cleaning equipment, personal protective equipment, air respirator, full face respirator, retractable knife (NASSCO approved only) mechanical and hand tools, conventional and airless equipment. Metal, wood, scaffold sub-section, bolts, clips, pneumatic tools, high reaching equipment, painting or chipping equipment, and cleaning equipment. Office furniture, file cabinets, and dollies. Personal protective equipment required.Marginal Job TasksWorks with the General Services Department in erecting and dismantling scaffold, water evacuation, load out and grooming compartments. Works with the Blast Department in performing blast setup, recovery, blow down and final groom. General housekeeping required in work areasPhysical/Mental InvolvementColor vision. Frequent to continuous lifting of paint equipment; occasional lifting of up to 94 lb. paint cans. Standing, balancing, walking, climbing ladders or equipment, reaching above shoulder or out in front, manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, kneeling, bending, seeing, hearing and occasionally lowering self into confined spaces, crawling through small openings and working in reclined positions, as needed. Works in all areas of the shipyard and on board ships. Must be able to correctly follow roping and tying techniques. Hearing warning signals and reading and comprehending safety instructions. Must be able to maintain general safety awareness and avoid hazards commonly present in employee’s work area. Environmental FactorsExposure to fumes, odors, dust, gases, various climates and temperatures, and low ventilation conditions, all of which can cause discomfort and/or respiratory difficulties.
