Deputy Corporate Counsel (Litigation) — Remote CA Only (Education Industry)
Compensation: $150,000–$175,000 annually
Location: Remote (with occasional travel to campuses, conferences, and events)
Industry: Higher Education | Supporting college campuses
Reports to: Chief Legal Officer
About the Role
Join a mission-driven legal team in the education industry as a Deputy Corporate Counsel (Litigation). In this remote position, you’ll provide strategic employment law counseling, oversee litigation handled by outside firms, and ensure compliance across a multi-campus organization. You’ll also supervise legal staff and serve as a trusted partner to HR and campus leadership—helping resolve student matters and strengthen institutional policies.

Key Responsibilities
Employment & Compliance
- Provide employment law counseling to leadership and HR on hiring, discipline, leaves, accommodations, wage/hour, and policy matters.
- Conduct compliance counseling and policy reviews to align with federal/state regulations and best practices.
- Review subpoenas and legal process, providing guidance on proper response and organizational compliance.
- Implement and maintain the legal holds platform, including issuance, tracking, and release protocols.
Litigation & Investigations
- Monitor and manage outside litigation (primarily employment) handled by external law firms; assist with strategy, discovery, and settlement insights.
- Support internal investigations (employment-related and other matters), including fact development and documentation.
- Assist campus Title IX Coordinators with administration of Title IX policies and procedures, ensuring compliance and fair process.
Campus & Department Liaison
- Serve as the Legal Department liaison to campus leadership on student disputes and resolution pathways.
- Collaborate closely with HR and operational leaders to proactively address legal risks and training needs.
- Contribute to Legal Department operations, workflows, matter tracking, and process improvements.
People Leadership
- Supervise assigned paralegals and office personnel: training, work planning, performance appraisals, coaching, recognition, and corrective actions as needed.
- Foster a culture of integrity, confidentiality, and high-quality work across the legal function.
Other
- Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned.
- Represent the organization at conferences and events to support professional growth and external engagement.

Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school.
- 5+ years of experience in private practice and/or corporate law departments.
- Active California State Bar membership.
- Proven ability to interpret federal and state statutes, regulations, case law, and complex legal documents.
- Experience preparing agreements, policies, presentations, and handbooks aligned with style and publication standards.
- Effective communicator with top management, employees, and boards of directors.
Tools & Systems
- Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook).
- Legal research platforms: Westlaw or Lexis.
- Enterprise legal management (eBilling/matter management): e.g., CounselLink.
- Contract management systems: e.g., Cobblestone.
Travel & Professional Development
- Remote role with occasional travel to college campuses across states based on business needs.
- Attendance at conferences and industry events is encouraged and may be required for growth and experience.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
- Remote professional environment; frequent sitting, computer use, talking/hearing; occasional walking and standing.
- May occasionally lift/move: 10–25 lbs, and up to 50 lbs on rare occasions.
