Job Description

The Marine Systems Maintenance Specialist is responsible for maintaining and repairing ship propulsion and auxiliary systems, including steam, turbine, electrical, and diesel propulsion systems. The role involves working with rudders, steering gear, elevators, and Navy UNREP systems, and requires the installation, repair, and maintenance of ship fluid systems such as pumps, compressors, purifiers, heat exchangers, actuators, and valves.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair ship propulsion and auxiliary systems, including steam, turbine, electrical, and diesel systems.
  • Install, repair, and maintain ship fluid systems like pumps, compressors, and purifiers.
  • Test equipment to ensure systems meet specifications.
  • Install and test various shop equipment.
  • Repair, troubleshoot, and perform maintenance on boilers, pumps, and valves.
  • Work aboard ships on auxiliary equipment, pumps, valves, and boiler systems.
  • Perform major and specialized mechanical overhaul and repair work on gasoline and marine engines.
  • Establish and maintain a preventive maintenance program for marine engines.
  • Test marine engines and equipment to determine repair or adjustment needs.
  • Repair and maintain hydraulic equipment and valves.
  • Operate hand and power tools associated with marine engine and equipment repair.
  • Assist in the fabrication of equipment.

Essential Skills

  • Journeyman level Outside Machinist with 5+ years of experience.
  • DBIDS eligible and able to work on NBSD and NASNI.
  • Minimum three years of experience in a related field or graduate of a Diesel or Aircraft Mechanic training school.
  • Experience in Navy ratings such as BT, CM, EN, GS, HT, or MR.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, written instructions, and technical manuals.
  • Proficient in reading and comprehending hydraulic and pneumatic diagrams.
  • Capable of assembling and installing complex mechanical systems.
  • Proficient in the use of precision measurement tools.
  • Understanding of both Imperial and Metric measuring systems.
  • Shop mathematics skills, including geometry, trigonometry, and working with decimals and fractions.
  • Ability to safely use hand and power tools and portable machining tools.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working on board ships on auxiliary equipment and diesel engines.
  • Experience with propulsion shafting repairs is a plus.
  • Ideally, some shipyard experience working for a company post-Navy experience.
  • Transitioning candidates from the Navy ideally have 6+ years of experience.

Work Environment

The work will be performed in New Construction at NASSCO yard, providing a hands-on and engaging environment for marine systems specialists.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of San Diego, California.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $42.00/hr.
