Job Description
The Commercial Plumbing Estimator role at Empyrean Plumbing, Inc. is a core member of our pre-construction team; working with other Estimators to ensure that our projects are set to succeed from the start. Using their extensive experience and background knowledge, Commercial Plumbing Estimators not only provide accurate material & manpower costs – but also use their expertise to complete and correct any imperfect engineering plans/blueprints (within the project’s plumbing scope.)
- Common Tools/Software Used: Bluebeam Revu, FastEST Software (FastPIPE), Microsoft Excel, PDF Editing Software, Outlook.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Review project plans, specifications, and other documents to prepare accurate cost estimates for plumbing projects.
- Collaborate with project managers, architects, and subcontractors to gather necessary information for estimating purposes.
- Identifies missing components, code compliance issues, or potential cross-trades conflicts with imperfect or incomplete drawings/data.
- Analyze project requirements and determine the most cost-effective methods and materials to be used.
- Generates takeoff reports with revised drawings and verifies their accuracy.
- Obtain and evaluate subcontractor bids and proposals.
- Create and maintain a comprehensive database of historical cost information for future reference.
- Monitors all addenda, scope changes, and breakouts to ensure they are processed and incorporated in a timely manner.
- Participate in pre-bid meetings and site visits to assess project conditions and requirements
- Communicates and justifies project estimates in detail to internal and external parties.
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
- Education: High School Diploma or GED/Equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of 4+ Years of experience working in the Commercial Construction Industry (specifically Plumbing related – Plumber/Pipelayer, Journeyman, Foreman etc..)
- Experience: Graduate of an apprenticeship program ( ABC Associated Builders & Contractors, Local Plumbers & Pipefitters, etc..)
- Skill: Ability to thoroughly read, understand, and edit Plumbing, Piping, Architectural, Structural, and Civil Engineering blueprints/drawings.
- Knowledge & Understanding of Piping Fixtures and Equipment Connections.
- Knowledge & Understanding of basic cost parameters for Material & Manpower/Labor.
- Knowledge & Understanding of local Plumbing codes & ADA Standards.
- Knowledge & Understanding of Plumbing Systems (knowing of what completes these systems and how they operate.)
- Systems Knowledge: Domestic Water, Sanitary Waste, etc.
- Computer Skills: ability to use Estimating Software, edit PDFs, Microsoft Excel competency, and electronic file management (storage/organization and import/export.)
PREFERENCES:
- Licensed Plumbing Experience (Apprentice/Journeyman/Foreman, Superintendent etc.) is very beneficial!
- Higher Education in Construction Management or Engineering related studies.
- Prior Experience in Estimating or Pre-Construction roles.
- Prior Experience in Supervisory or Superintendent roles within the Construction Industry.
QUALITIES OF IDEAL CANDIDATE:
- Time Management + Willingness to work overtime to meet the demands of project deadlines.
- Attention to detail – regarding data/numbers and blueprints/drawings
- Analytical – ability to isolate and understand breakouts and how they incorporate back into the total scope of a project.
- Proficient in reading and interpreting plumbing plans and specifications
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written
