JOB SUMMARY
The Landscaping Technician works under the supervision of the Facilities Engineering Director and is required to perform a wide variety of skilled duties including mowing lawns, edging, trimming, pruning, removing weeds, maintaining overall cleanliness of grounds. Additionally, the landscaping technician will troubleshoot, repair, and perform preventive maintenance on sprinklers, valves and timers. The landscaping Technician works closely with the contracted Landscaping crew to assure overall care of the grounds is well kept, and all safety rules and procedures are followed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Receive and follow landscaping schedule/instructions from supervisor as outlined in established landscaping procedures. Activities include planting, pruning, fertilizing, watering, weeding, mulching, and pesticide applications, pest control, garden cleanup, and custodial tasks
- Maintain all work areas, shops, utility and landscaping rooms in clean and organized manner. Carry a radio and other communication equipment while on duty and respond in a timely manner

- Operates and maintains hand tools, power tools (chain saw, blower, lawnmower,
- (string trimmer), electric carts, tractors, and other equipment.
- Inspect, repair and maintain all irrigation systems and equipment, i.e., electrical systems, plumbing systems,
- Maintain records of work performed by completing work orders.
- Maintain inventory of materials on hand and materials used.
- Follow established safety procedure in the performance of landscaping/maintenance duties.
- Relate tactfully and courteously with residents.
- Participate in surveillance activities to recognize and eliminate potential hazards in and around the buildings and grounds. Report all incidents, accidents, unsafe/hazardous conditions and/or equipment immediately including equipment malfunctions or breakdowns as soon as possible.
- Perform digging and pipe repair.
- Participate in management of utilities by being aware of and taking appropriate action on issues relating to the efficient use of electricity, gas, and water. Keep supervisor advised on all utility issues.
- Makes security checks on grounds, trees, sprinklers, valves, timers and outside lighting. Performs repairs as needed.
- Follows established safety procedures and precautions in the performance of landscaping and maintenance duties.
- Reports equipment malfunction or breakdown and defective equipment to a supervisor as soon as possible, if unable to correct.
- Attend seminars, in-services, and educational or technical classes as necessary.
- Maintains professional working relationships with residents and co-workers.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent experience.
- Maintain a valid, non-restricted California Driver’s License
- Possess three (3) years’ experience in landscaping trades
- Possess knowledge of safety practices of landscaping and irrigation trades.
- Possess ability to operate various motor vehicles, i.e., cars, vans, small trucks, battery and fuel powered service carts.
- Possess ability to properly operate power tools and all types of common hand tools.
- Possess effective oral and written communication skills and the ability to read English.
- Possess ability to read and interpret electrical schematic diagrams.
- Possess good hand to eye coordination and depth perception.
- Possess ability to differentiate between various colors.
- Possess ability to disassemble and reassemble electrical and mechanical devices
