About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned Head of Legal Department to lead all aspects of legal strategy, compliance, and risk management for a global consumer products and entertainment company. This individual will act as a trusted advisor to the executive team, providing counsel across corporate governance, intellectual property, contracts, regulatory compliance, and international operations.
This is a high-impact leadership position requiring expertise in consumer products, entertainment, and intellectual property law, with the ability to navigate the evolving global marketplace.
Key Responsibilities
Legal Strategy & Leadership
- Advise executive leadership, company officers, and board of directors.
- Develop and execute legal strategies aligned with global business objectives.
- Manage and mentor internal legal staff and external counsel.
- Provide legal support for M&A, joint ventures, and strategic initiatives.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with U.S. and international laws (e.g., product safety, consumer protection, data privacy, advertising).
- Oversee risk management programs, recalls, and safety protocols.
- Monitor and interpret emerging legal and regulatory developments.
Intellectual Property (IP)
- Protect and enforce global trademarks, copyrights, patents, and trade secrets.
- Manage disputes, counterfeiting issues, and unauthorized use of IP.
- Support licensing negotiations with partners worldwide.
Contracts & Commercial Law
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts across retail, licensing, distribution, vendor, manufacturing, and talent agreements.
- Provide legal guidance on promotions, influencer partnerships, digital media, and e-commerce initiatives.
Corporate Governance & Ethics
- Ensure compliance with governance standards and support board activities.
- Lead investigations and oversee company ethics policies.
- Support training initiatives around compliance and code of conduct.
Qualifications
Education & Licensing
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school.
- Active membership with at least one U.S. state bar (California strongly preferred).
Experience
- 10–15+ years of progressive legal experience, including leadership roles in-house or at a law firm.
- Strong background in consumer products, entertainment, or related industries.
- Deep knowledge of intellectual property law, licensing, compliance, and international commercial law.
- Demonstrated ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
Preferred
- Experience with toy or consumer product safety standards (CPSC, ASTM F963, etc.).
- Oversight of legal matters across the Asia-Pacific and EMEA regions.
- Entertainment law background, including licensing and studio partnerships.
