OBJECTIVE

The Yard Associate I is responsible for receiving, stocking, and preparing inventory for shipment. This entry-level role involves loading and unloading trucks (both company and customer vehicles), building loads for delivery, and maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient lumberyard. As a key point of customer interaction, this position plays a vital role in providing excellent customer service. The role also requires the safe operation of a forklift and other yard equipment.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate all equipment and perform duties in compliance with safety policies and procedures.
  • Receive incoming materials, verify accuracy, and record inventory.
  • Stock materials in appropriate storage areas, ensuring proper organization.
  • Assist with pulling, preparing, and loading customer and delivery orders.
  • Provide outstanding customer service, including resolving minor issues on-site.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization in yard, bays, and staging areas.
  • Support inventory control efforts, including cycle counts and stock rotation.
  • Operate forklifts and other equipment, including banders, power tools, and saws, as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
  • Follow and improve upon existing operational procedures.
  • Participate in required training and development programs.
  • Perform general maintenance, landscaping, and housekeeping duties.
  • Assist with walk-in and pick-up customer orders, ensuring accurate fulfillment.
  • Other tasks as assigned by management.

SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Ability to do basic math, read orders, write instructions, and complete forms.
  • Ability to use power tools safely; experience making basic cuts is a plus.
  • Ability and or willingness to learn tape measure reading and other measurement tools.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Customer-focused with the ability to recognize and resolve issues effectively.
  • Capable of handling a fast-paced and physically demanding work environment.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • OSHA-certified forklift license preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
  • Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at times.
  • Manual dexterity as needed to operate a variety of machinery and equipment.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises and smells associated with the plant.
