OBJECTIVE
The Yard Associate I is responsible for receiving, stocking, and preparing inventory for shipment. This entry-level role involves loading and unloading trucks (both company and customer vehicles), building loads for delivery, and maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient lumberyard. As a key point of customer interaction, this position plays a vital role in providing excellent customer service. The role also requires the safe operation of a forklift and other yard equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Operate all equipment and perform duties in compliance with safety policies and procedures.
- Receive incoming materials, verify accuracy, and record inventory.
- Stock materials in appropriate storage areas, ensuring proper organization.
- Assist with pulling, preparing, and loading customer and delivery orders.
- Provide outstanding customer service, including resolving minor issues on-site.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization in yard, bays, and staging areas.
- Support inventory control efforts, including cycle counts and stock rotation.
- Operate forklifts and other equipment, including banders, power tools, and saws, as needed.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and customers.
- Follow and improve upon existing operational procedures.
- Participate in required training and development programs.
- Perform general maintenance, landscaping, and housekeeping duties.
- Assist with walk-in and pick-up customer orders, ensuring accurate fulfillment.
- Other tasks as assigned by management.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Basic computer literacy.
- Ability to do basic math, read orders, write instructions, and complete forms.
- Ability to use power tools safely; experience making basic cuts is a plus.
- Ability and or willingness to learn tape measure reading and other measurement tools.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
- Customer-focused with the ability to recognize and resolve issues effectively.
- Capable of handling a fast-paced and physically demanding work environment.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- OSHA-certified forklift license preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking.
- Must be able to lift up to 45 pounds at times.
- Manual dexterity as needed to operate a variety of machinery and equipment.
- Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and tolerate exposure to typical noises and smells associated with the plant.
